RECENT HIGHLIGHTS

THE WASHINGTON POST, BY SARAH KAPLAN

AUGUST 25, 2023

Schaefer founded the Lamont Cosmogenic Nuclide Laboratory in 2004, and his research group has become a leader in ‘Climate and Glacier Change’ and ‘Earth Surface Process’ science. Scientists in Lamont Cosmo Group apply isotope techniques to evaluate the response of ice on the Earth’s continents to past, modern and future warming.

Key Research Interests

How glaciers and ice-sheets respond to past and modern warming;

How changing ice and related hazards, such as tsunamis and glacial lake outburst floods, impact environment and society;

How science can assist in developing solution strategies for these climate-related challenges.

Recent Project

GreenDrill

“Recent scientific evidence across disciplines points to an unstable Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS), which is particularly concerning in view of a rapidly changing Arctic system, its impacts on local communities and ecosystems, and the regional and global impacts of sea-level rise.”
